What I'm talking about are the Bigfin Squid also nicknamed the long-armed squid, they really do look like something out of an Alien movie only they have way longer tentacles. I'll let the wiki fill you in on the details of these creatures.
I was sent the following video by one of the readers of this blog, I managed to find it on youtube along with a couple others.
At first I almost dismissed this as some kind of computer generated creation, though after a little research I found them to be a real species. All the info you need in identifying where this footage came from is right on screen, lucky that.
I'm pretty sure the next two pieces of footage came from MBARI.
It's been pretty hard finding any other videos to embed in this post but I did manage to find a site that has a bunch of footage of the bizarre squid, probably lists all the known footage that's out there.
Geez I love this stuff, I can't imagine how boring life would be without a daily dose of the strange.
From what I can tell the Spar is an offshore platform known as the Pardido regional host. The platform is tethered to the sea floor. Anyways in most offshore operations they user ROVs to survey down below and they can also perform small task. I believe this is where the video came from. Pasted a couple of links below.

Cheers Orie, just makes me wonder just what they may have missed on those ROV videos. Gotta be crazy amounts of strange and wonderful things down there still undiscovered.
ReplyDeleteP.S sorry about your comment not appearing straight away, had it set to moderate comment with more that two links, all fixed up now.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree.
Glad I found this website. I now know where to get my "daily dose of the strange"
Cheers Murdock, glad to be of service. It's hard finding the strangest of the strange mind you, but I hope to be able to bring it to everyone when I do.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Rand
